Causes of Swollen Eyes and Easy Treatment

Swollen eyes can be caused by many things, from fluid buildup to severe infections. This condition generally can subside by itself in a short time and can be handled alone. But if the symptoms do not improve or there are complaints that are getting heavier to disrupt the activity, then you need to get treatment.

Swollen eyes are generally caused by edema or buildup of excess fluid on the eyelids or connective tissue around the eyes. But there are also many other things that can trigger this condition, so how to deal with swollen eyes must be adjusted to the cause.


Various Causes of Swollen Eyes
Swollen eyes can be caused by things like allergies, insect bites, conjunctivitis, cysts or blockages of oil glands in the eyes, and injuries or trauma that are often accompanied by changes in skin color. In other cases, eye irritation that is often accompanied by red eyes, itching, or visual disturbances can also occur when the eyes are swollen. There are times when swollen eyes are also caused by systemic disorders that affect the entire body, such as Graves' disease or proptosis, a condition in which the eyes stand out abnormally. The most common causes of swollen eyes are crying, eye injuries, and allergies.

Some other people experience swollen eyes due to chalazion cysts, inflammation of the eyelids (blefaritis), cellulitis or bacterial infections under the skin surface, nodules, tumors, foreign objects in the eye, and bacterial or viral infections.

Swollen eyes accompanied by itching are often caused by allergies. This condition needs to be treated so that the symptoms are resolved. Swelling mainly occurs because of itching which encourages you to rub your eyes. If too much is rubbed, the eyes will become more swollen and at risk of infection and suppuration.

Swollen Eye Treatment at Home
Below are a few things you can do yourself to deal with swollen eyes.

  • Compress the eyes with a soft cloth soaked in cold and clean water. You can also place an ice-filled bag in the eye for 15 minutes, once an hour.
  • For certain cases, such as cysts and nodules, warm compresses can help launch blockages in the oil glands. Compress can be done 4-5 times a day.
  • Rinse the eyes with a salt solution, especially if the eyes discharge or after exposure to foreign matter.
  • Remove the lens if you wear contact lenses.
  • At night, raise your head on a pillow to reduce the risk of fluid buildup.
  • Caffeine can help relieve swelling. Place a wet and cooled tea bag in closed eyes.
  • Swollen eyes due to allergies can be treated with antihistamine eye drops. However, severe allergies need to be treated by a doctor.
  • Avoid pressing eye drops or break boils on the eyes.
  • Avoid doing sports or activities that are at risk of worsening swollen eyes.
  • Use eye protection when traveling out of the house.
  • Clean your eyes with a soft baby shampoo. How to rub baby shampoo in hand, mix with water until foamy, then wipe the eyes with the foam. Gently massage the eyes for a while, then rinse with clean water.
Meanwhile, if the swollen eyes have subsided, to prevent the eyes from getting swollen again, you can try to take preventive measures such as:

  • Wash the pillowcase and replace it with a clean one.
  • Avoid faces and or eyes from trigger inflammation such as make up.
  • If swollen eyes are caused by beauty products, replace them with other safer products.
  • Use eye drops that do not contain preservatives.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes. This habit can make the eyes more red, itchy, and swollen due to infection. Keep your hands clean by washing your hands regularly.
  • If the eyes are swollen due to allergies, avoid consuming or being exposed to allergens.
Keep in mind, symptoms in swollen eyes accompanied by impaired vision, fever, difficulty or unable to move the eyeball, nausea, vomiting, severe headaches, history of injury or exposure to chemicals, use of contact lenses, frequent relapses or appear due to allergic reactions accompanied by shortness of breath are conditions that need to be addressed immediately.
