Know the Causes of Acoustic Neuroma
Acoustic neuroma is a disease that occurs because benign tumors appear on the vestibular nerve balance alias. This part is connecting the ear with the brain. Tumors that grow will cover the nerve balance, thus disrupting the hearing function and body balance. Acoustic neuromas usually affect adults between the ages of 30-60 years.

These benign tumors generally develop slowly and rarely spread to other body parts. Even so, acoustic neuromas should not be considered trivial at all. Acoustic neuroma can be a serious problem if a tumor that grows becomes very large and compresses the brain stem, can even be life threatening. So, what exactly causes acoustic neuroma tumors to appear?

Symptoms of this disease are generally only felt when the tumor has grown and enlarged. This disease is thought to occur due to impaired gene function on chromosome 22, a gene that controls tumor growth and covers nerve cells in the body. This gene also plays a role in controlling tumors that attack the vestibular nerve. Even so, it is still unknown what causes interference with the chromosome 22 gene.

Immediate treatment can help prevent this condition from getting worse. Acoustic neuromas are usually treated by periodic observation, radiation, or surgery to remove the tumor. Diagnosis of this disease is done by asking about the symptoms experienced and continued with a physical examination, especially on the ears.

Diagnosing this disease is also done with several supporting tests to be sure. One type of supporting test that can be done is a hearing test, aka audiometry, which is done by playing a sound in various tones of sound in each ear.
