Wearing a mask is considered to protect against the risk of contracting the disease. This can also be the opposite, preventing transmission of disease. However, mask protection can only be maximized if the mask is used properly.
Previously, many doubted the effectiveness of masks to prevent transmission of the virus. However,
research confirms that if the right mask is used properly, it is
effective in preventing the spread of viral infections. Research
shows that family members who wear a mask when someone has the flu have
a lower risk of contracting it than those who don't wear a mask.
Recognizing Mask Types
Generally there are 2 main types of health masks that can be selected as needed. Come on, look at the shortcomings and strengths:
Surgical mask
Surgical masks are masks commonly used by medical workers such as doctors when handling patients. These masks are usually thin, green or blue. This mask can prevent droplets of body fluids such as sweat, runny nose, saliva, and phlegm from sterile areas when surgery is performed.
Because the price is affordable and easily available anywhere, this type of mask is often used to reduce exposure to pollution, dirt, and dust that are inhaled while driving. In addition it is also often used as a barrier, so that saliva or phlegm does not spread through coughing or sneezing.
However, the disadvantage of this type of mask is that it does not protect against germs or viruses from inhaled air, and can only be used for single use. This mask must also be removed if it is damp or wet because it is no longer effective.
N95 breathing mask
The name N95 is taken from the fact that this mask can filter 95% of large and small air particles. These masks are also commonly used to protect themselves from toxic materials or when painting. To provide maximum protection, this mask must be properly installed so that there is no gap for the virus from the air.
Excess masks of this type can protect users from small particles in the air that may contain germs or viruses that cause respiratory infections. This mask can also be used repeatedly, although the N95 mask filter needs to be replaced within a certain period of time. However, N95 masks cost more than surgical masks.
Tips for Getting the Most from Mask Protection
Although it does not fully guarantee you avoid disease, at least the use of this mask can provide additional protection to reduce the risk of disease transmission. However, you need to remember that masks will not provide protection if they are not properly worn.
Try it, see the right way to wear a mask:
- Before touching a mask, wash your hands with soap and water or an antiseptic hand sanitizer.
- Open the mask from the packaging. Make sure there are no holes or tears on each side of the mask. The colored surface of the mask usually indicates the front of the mask, while the white part is the one that attaches to the face.
- Make sure the hook strap is firm and closes the nose, mouth and chin.
- Wear a mask about 2 meters away before approaching a sick person.
- Try not to hold the mask again until when you are going to take it off.
Now using masks to avoid disease transmission is increasingly common. So you don't need to be embarrassed or reluctant when using it. So prepare a mask and choose the type of mask that fits your needs right.
